Tessa Fox- Fine Artist
How have you remained creative during lockdown?
I’m not entirely sure I have. I guess creativity starts with reading a lot for me – generally I find when I’m not thinking about art is when things eventually piece themselves together the best? I think I’m nearing 20 books that I’ve read since the start of lockdown now.
Has your creative practice changed at all during lock down?
Working without a studio has definitely been new to me, especially going from 3 years at uni and then having one at work. Making space in my flat for my work has been hard – probably another reason why I’ve been reading and writing a lot more instead, it’s an easier practice to condense.
Where have you been able to get your inspiration from during lockdown?
I was taking my phone on walks a lot and photographing anything and everything. This time has really made me appreciate the smaller things, like I’ll find my camera rolls has pictures of flowers and pebbles now as well as bigger landscapes. Grayson Perry’s art club has been class too.
I also took the time to reframe my social media, following accounts that genuinely interest me and I find influential. I spend a bit of time scrolling through Instagram every day and this change has definitely helped.
Have you been able to designate a space for being creative?
No ☹ although I have started sitting in my doorway (which is out onto a balcony). It’s been nice to read and then look up at blue skies…most of the time.
Do you have any advice for those people that are getting creative at home during this time?
Creativity never has to be what you think it is – some people draw, some knit, some go for walks. Creativity is definitely more of a space of mind and a willingness to learn than just producing a final outcome, celebrate anything you’ve done!
